There isn’t really a whole lot that I love more than a good brunch; it’s the perfect way to start off a busy day, which is certainly what my friends and I had last Saturday during our weekend in Barcelona. We planned to see and do as much as humanly possible in one day, so morning fuel was of seriously high importance.
I visited Brunch & Cake during my previous visit to Barcelona, and was so impressed that I had to return. You know sometimes you go back to a place that you loved, to find that actually it isn’t as good as you remember it being, or that maybe it’s gone a little downhill? Brunch & Cake is not one of those places. If you are in Barcelona, I strongly urge you to give it a go and would even go as far as labelling it an unforgettable brunch experience!
The cafe is relatively small, but equally as adorable, so it does get busy. Luckily, we didn’t have to queue for a table this time around but when I have been before in warmer weather, and at a slightly later time, there was a long old queue to wait in. It’s worth it, though.
Brunch & Cake has a menu that is so different to anything I have ever seen before and I love it. I think I have mentioned before on this blog that pancakes are my favourite breakfast. They are probably also a dish that I eat far too regularly, but we don’t need to go into that. So, I went for the banana and ricotta oat pancakes (wheat free), which are served with a mountain of fruit, nuts and homemade granola.
Do you see what I mean about a mountain of toppings? You can’t even see the pancakes (or the banana that was hidden underneath them)! I have to admit, this meal defeated me. I wanted to finish it so badly, but the portion was just a bit too much. My two friends found this with their meals as well, actually, so I guess you could say that is my only negative remark about our experience at Brunch & Cake.
As well as the food, I will also mention that our freshly squeezed orange juices were wonderful, as were the coffees. Brunch & Cake offer you the option of semi-skimmed milk, almond milk or coconut milk in your drink and I have to say, coconut milk lattes are delicious!
Brunch & Cake certainly don’t scrimp on the presentation of their dishes; what a great way to use the tops of the pineapples that no-one is going to eat! Every meal that came out of the kitchen here looked almost too good to eat.
Both of my friends went for the same dish, taking full advantage of the option to have chocolate for breakfast. These Nutella pancakes were honestly as thick as chocolate brownies, and were also served with a tonne of fruit, oat and nut toppings/sides. We certainly weren’t about to go hungry.
As much as I love trying new restaurants, when I next go back to Barcelona (and I will be going back, because it is fast becoming my favourite city in Spain) it will be a challenge to find a brunch restaurant as good as Brunch & Cake. My only complaint is that I wish more dishes were wheat/gluten free so that I could try more of the menu!
