I am always, always up for trying a new restaurant, and whilst Cod & Waffle in Leighton Buzzard isn’t newly open, it was new to me and I was dead excited to check it out. I had never been to a ‘waffle house’ type restaurant before and their menu intrigued me. Now, having thoroughly enjoyed a meal there, I can tell you that I will absolutely be going back to try more dishes (in fact it took me so long to get around to writing this post that I have now been back and I still love it just as much).
Although it might not look like much from the outside, indoors Cod & Waffle is clean, bright and open. And they serve fab iced coffees. Plus, they offer a gluten free and a vegan menu. Could you ask for much more? I think not.
I am currently trialling (I say that because I’m going to try my best to stick to it but I’m not a fan of putting too much pressure on myself) a vegetarian diet, so I went for the vegetarian chilli waffle. My Dad went for the vegan option of the same dish, which came without the sour cream and cheese but with avocado, which I ordered for myself as a side.
One of the many things that impressed me about Cod & Waffle, was their huge range of gluten free options. Any waffle can be made gluten free, the batter on their fish and chips can be made gluten free and the vast majority of waffle or sundae toppings are gluten free as well. I cannot tell you how refreshing it is to be given a menu with so many coeliac-friendly options, it adds so much to my enjoyment of a meal/new restaurant.
I have to say, there wasn’t a huge amount of variety across our table during this meal, because the other two dishes ordered were beef chilli savoury waffles. These looked equally as delicious as the veggie version, and just as huge of a portion was dished up too.
I have to say I was a little dubious about savoury waffles, especially seeing as I have never been the biggest fan of sweet waffles (I much prefer pancakes), but I was hugely impressed. It’s a bit like having a delicious topping on an even better version of toast. Basically just yummy.
Personally I was too full for dessert, but my Mum took full advantage of the hot drink and a mini waffle deal that was on offer (and still is) and went for coffee and a mini rocky road dessert. I have to say ‘mini’ isn’t the best way to describe this dish, it’s definitely smaller than our main courses but not by much! You could never say that Cod & Waffle don’t give you value for your money.
Overall, as I think you can tell, I was so happy with Cod & Waffle. I wish I had tried it sooner, they’ve been open for nearly two years!
If you’re in the area, I highly recommend it. Whether you’re in the mood for a savoury meal or you have a sweeter tooth, you won’t be disappointed.
